Strain typing is an important tool for understanding the epidemiology of infectious diseases, as well as for tracking the spread of pathogens. By identifying the source of an infection, Public Health officials can take steps to prevent its further spread. Moreover, by understanding which strains are circulating in a population, researchers can develop better diagnostic tests and vaccines.
