Strain Typing
Strain typing is the process of determining the identity of a particular microbe. This can be accomplished through a variety of methods, but sequencing and microbiology are two of the most common. Sequencing involves amplifying and then sequencing a region of DNA that is unique to the microbe in question. This can be done using a variety of techniques, such as PCR or Sanger sequencing. Microbiology, on the other hand, relies on the physical characteristics of the microbe in order to identify it. This can include anything from its size and shape to its biochemical properties. Strain typing is an important tool for understanding the epidemiology of infectious diseases, as well as for tracking the spread of pathogens. By identifying the source of an infection, Public Health officials can take steps to prevent its further spread. Moreover, by understanding which strains are circulating in a population, researchers can develop better diagnostic tests and vaccines.
